Westlake and Berea-Midpark Earn Weekly SWC Track and Field Honors

Following track meets on May 10th – May 16th the track and field athletes of the week for the Southwestern Conference were announced this afternoon. Below are this week’s honorees:

Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week
Sarah Peer (Fr)
Westlake
Second week in a row that a freshman Lady Demon receives the honor of Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week, with Sarah Peer earning the laurels after her performance at the SWC Championship Meet this past week.  Peer won gold twice, winning the 800m run and helping set a new Westlake High School record in the winning 4x800m relay.  The freshman also set a new school record in the 1600m with her second place finish and helped Westlake’s 4×400 team finish third.  Peer was responsible for 34 of Westlake’s conference championship points.

Other Notable Performances

Chaley Younkin (Sr), Amherst Steele
Younkin was crowned the SWC champion in both the 100m hurdles (15.12) and the high jump (5-06.00) where she tied the Amherst Steele school record.  The senior went on to finish sixth in the 200m (26.96) and helped the 4x100m relay team finish in fifth.

Gemma Kilgore (Jr), North Ridgeville
With her first place finish in the 400m, Kilgore broke the North Ridgeville school record.  She also anchored the first place and school record breaking 4x400m relay team for the Rangers.

Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week
Evan Alten (Sr)
Berea-Midpark
Alten paced the Titans in the SWC Championship Meet, as the senior scored 34 team points for Berea-Midpark.  On Wednesday, Alten ran the anchor leg of the 4x800m relay to a second place finish, with an individual split time of 1:50.9.  The senior kicked off his Friday slate of events by shattering a Berea-Midpark record in the 1600m run, finishing in first with a time of 4:16.42.  Alten would finish Friday with a second place finish in the 800m run (1:57.49) and run the anchor leg in the second place 4x400m relay (3:28.03).

Other Notable Performances

Ryan Sanborn (Jr), North Olmsted
Sanborn had four top five finishes at the conference championship meet last week.  The junior finished in third in both the high jump and 110m hurdles.  Sanborn would finish fourth in the 300m hurdles and helped the Eagles to a fifth place finish in the 4x100m relay.

Cameron Byrd (Jr), Olmsted Falls
Byrd won the 400m with his time of 50.98.  The junior had the fastest split in the 4x200m relay (22.0) where the Bulldogs finished second.  Byrd also ran in the sixth place 4x400m relay.
