SWC Approves Modified 2020 HS Football Schedule

The Southwestern Conference Athletic Directors formally approved its modified six-game football schedule Saturday (August 15) afternoon.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced on August 7 that if Ohio Governor Mike DeWine gives the go-ahead for inter-squad competition between interscholastic contact sports then the 2020 football season will feature a six-week regular season before a playoff that includes every team in the state. The playoffs are slated to begin in week 7.

Southwestern Conference member Westlake notified the league of its decision not to compete in the SWC football schedule for 2020. The Demons, who will depart for the Great Lakes Conference following the 2020-21 school year, plan to compete in all other league sports this school year.

As a result of Westlake’s decision, the SWC will run an 8-team, six-week football slate. Every team will play every school except one. The potential lies for those match-ups to take place at the end of the year if both teams are eliminated from the OHSAA playoffs.

The schedule was born out of week 4 through week 9 of the 2022 schedule but replacing Elyria, who will join the SWC next year, with North Olmsted, who will join Westlake in moving to the GLC.

Week 1 begins August 28 with Avon at Avon Lake, Berea-Midpark at North Olmsted, Midview at Olmsted Falls and North Ridgeville at Amherst.

Week 2 sees Berea-Midpark hosting Avon Lake, Midview hosting Amherst, Olmsted Falls hosting Avon and North Ridgeville hosting North Olmsted.

Week 3 will feature Midview at Avon Lake, Amherst at Berea-Midpark, North Ridgeville at Avon and Olmsted Falls at North Olmsted.

Week 4 has Amherst hosting Avon Lake, Midview hosting Berea-Midpark, North Ridgeville hosting Olmsted Falls and Avon hosting North Olmsted.

In week 5, Berea-Midpark visits Avon, Amherst visits Olmsted Falls, Midview visits North Ridgeville and Avon Lake visits North Olmsted.

Week 6, the final tune-up for the OHSAA playoffs, will have Berea-Midpark hosting North Ridgeville, Avon Lake hosting Olmsted Falls, Midview hosting Avon and Amherst hosting North Olmsted.

Freshmen and Junior Varsity match-ups are still expected take place at the opposite site of varsity on Thursdays and Saturdays, respectfully.

More information with regards to spectator attendance and game management protocols will be announced once the SWC schools receive official guidance from the Governor and/or OHSAA.
