Avon Earns Weekly SWC Softball Player of the Week Honors

Following games on May 10th – May 16th, the softball player of the week for the Southwestern Conference was announced this afternoon. Below is this week’s honoree:

Softball Player of the Week
Kayla Dykin (Jr)
Avon

Flirting with a perfect game heading into the seventh inning, Kayla Dykin was cruising in the circle in Avon’s game against Westlake.  The junior hurler surrendered a hit and a walk in the final inning of the contest, but did not allow a runner to reach second base all day.  In the win, Dykin went seven innings, allowing 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk and striking out 16.  Four of the seven innings Dykin struck out the side in the victory.

Other Notable Performances

Sam Smearman (Jr), Berea-Midpark
On a week where Smearman hit .600 from the plate, the junior shortshop had a slugging percentage of 1.300 with one double and three triples on the week.  Smearman had seven runs batted in and scored five times with two stolen bases for the Titans.

Sara Gilley (Fr), North Olmsted
North Olmsted’s Gilley has been mentioned here often and with good reason.  The freshman catcher continues to shine behind the dish, catching two more base stealers last week.  On top of her strength behind the plate, Gilley had an average of .667 on the week with a slugging percentage of 1.111.  The freshman had two doubles and a triple.

Katie Barnhart (S0), North Ridgeville
Barnhart pitched a one hitter with 11 strikeouts in the Rangers victory over Parma in the sectional championship.  Barnhart had two doubles and scored three runs with an RBI in the victory.
