Avon High School had one first, three second and a third place finish en route to winning the 2024 Southwestern Conference Girls Tennis Tournament Championship Tuesday (September 17). It was the sixth straight league tournament title for the Eagles, who hosted the event again this season. [Complete Results (PDF)]
Avon went head-to-head against rival Avon Lake High School in four of the five league finals. Avon Lake’s Elizabeth Meiners defeated Avon’s Maddie Heun in straight sets in the Second Singles bracket. Kathleen Boatwright won Third Singles for the Shoregals by defeating the Eagles’ Teresa Sherwood 6-3, 6-1. Avon Lake also won at First Doubles when Autumn Korey and Avery Brown topped Sam Jackson and Nimrit Dhillon 6-1, 6-0. Avon took home the title at Second Doubles as Samantha Gault and Karina Marsden won 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Midview High School’s Katarina Yates defeated Amherst Steele High School’s Kayla Bussard 6-1, 6-2 in the finals of the First Singles bracket to win the Middies’ first ever SWC singles championship. Yates also won the 2022 First Doubles title with her older sister Gabby in 2022.
