Amherst Steele High School, fueled by a fifth score tie-breaker, earned a hard-fought victory at the 2020 Southwestern Conference Boys Golf Tournament Thursday (September 24) on the Legacy 18 of Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon Lake.
The Comets top four golfers—Ryan Yoder (73), Nathan Hamych (75), Brent Baumgartner (76) and Joey Kramer (77)—combined for a 301. A trio of Avon High School golfers—Jack Gerborg, Nolan King and Hunter McCourt—all fired a 75, while Brenton Dill had a 76 to also give the Eagles a 301. Amherst’s Austin Bray finished with a 79, while Avon’s Tyler Christy had an 83, which allowed the Comets to edge Avon for the title.
North Ridgeville’s Ben Lampe captured medalist honors with an even-par 72 from the Blue Tees. Yoder placed runner-up with his 73, while Olmsted Falls’ Ben Scheef finished with a 74. Gerborg Harymych, King, McCourt and Westlake’s Michael Ambrosino and Will Fankhauser rounded out the top finishers with a 75.
Westlake High School (309) place third as a team, while Olmsted Falls High School (315) was fourth and North Ridgeville High School (316) finished fifth. Avon Lake High School (322), Midview High School (335), Berea-Midpark High School (365) and North Olmsted High School (387) completed the team standings.
