Avon High School enters the 2020 Southwestern Conference Boys Golf Championship in control of its own destiny after winning the SWC Preview and finishing the SWC regular season undefeated.

The final piece of the SWC puzzle will be solved Thursday (September 24) with an 18-hole tournament on the Legacy Course of Sweetbriar Golf Course in Avon Lake. The first tee-times are slated for 8 a.m. The overall team champion is decided by a team’s standing in the 18-hole preview (30%), regular season (30%) and 18-hole championship (40%).

The Eagles, who finished 8-0 during regular season play, enter the final day with 27 points. Olmsted Falls is Avon’s closest competitor with 23.25 points, while Avon Lake and Amherst are tied for third with 19.5 points. In order for the Bulldogs to win the SWC title they would have to win the SWC Championship with Avon taking no higher than third place. The Shoremen or Comets can the overall crown if they win the SWC Championship, Olmsted Falls finishes no higher than third place and Avon is out of the top four.

Midview (15) is currently in fifth place, while Westlake (12.75), North Ridgeville (9), Berea-Midpark (6) and North Olmsted (3) round out places six through nine and will be looking to move up the standings with strong play on Thursday.

Avon junior Jack Gerborg enters the final day as the favorite to take home the SWC Most Valuable Player award. Gerborg, a 2019 All-SWC first team performer who finished runner-up for the award a year ago, brings a 2.010 “score minus course rating” into the championship. Olmsted Falls sophomore Ben Scheef is the closest competitor with a 2.620 average. The top six individuals earn All-SWC first team, while the next six golfers earn All-SWC second team in 2020.
